Gaja Lakshmi's Elephants & Lotuses
Elephants and lotuses together are one of India's oldest pairings. In the image of Gaja Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth sits on a lotus while two elephants pour water over her from raised trunks, a scene carved on the gateways of the Sanchi stupa more than two thousand years ago and painted on village walls ever since. The lotus stands for purity rising from mud; the elephant for royal strength and rain. This border sets both in patchwork squares, lit with real mirrors for garba nights.
