The design
From Mughal Buta to Modern Bloom
Flowers entered Indian textiles in force under the Mughals. Emperor Jahangir loved the blossoms of Kashmir, and his court artists painted them with botanical care; weavers and printers turned them into the buta, a single flowering plant repeated across the cloth. Over the centuries the buta travelled from Mughal silks to block-printed cottons and everyday saris. This lehenga takes the idea somewhere bolder: oversized open blooms in pink, coral and mustard, touched with foil and massed along the hem.
