The design
Zari: Surat's Thread of Gold
Zari, from the Persian zar for gold, began as real gold or silver drawn into wire fine enough to wind around a silk thread. Surat, in Gujarat, became the centre of the craft, and it still makes most of India's zari, now largely imitation: copper or polyester with a metallic finish. Gold borders at the neck, waist and hem once showed a family's wealth, and they still mark a garment for celebration. Here gold-toned thread and sequins trace those same three borders.
