Stone Work: Jewels Sewn into Cloth
Sewing stones onto cloth is an old Indian way of making a garment shine like jewellery. For the Mughal and Rajput courts, embroiderers worked real gems, seed pearls and gold thread into robes, sashes and furnishings. Today the stones are cut glass or acrylic, framed by a ring of zari thread and sequins that also holds them in place. Here, each red or green stone sits at the centre of a small gold medallion, echoing the rubies and emeralds of court jewellery.
