Zari Tissue: Metal Thread of the Looms
Tissue silk is a cloth woven with fine metal-coated yarn, called zari, so its surface catches light as it moves. The weaving towns around Varanasi and Surat have drawn and woven zari for centuries, and metallic cloth has long been worn for weddings and festivals. Gold thread stitched into the bodice and hem of an anarkali follows the same idea: the shine comes from metal, not dye. This piece is a machine-made version of that look, with sequin flowers and thread borders standing in for hand-worked zari. Spot-check: from general knowledge.
