The design
Ambi: The Paisley Mango Motif
The paisley is known in India as the ambi or kairi, the mango. A curved teardrop with a bent tip, it travelled from Persian and Mughal court art into Kashmir shawls and Banarasi brocade, and is still read as a sign of fertility and abundance, which is why it appears on wedding and festival cloth. Small flowers and vines grow around it, as they do here. This saree is machine embroidered in gold thread and sequins, a modern version of zardozi handwork.
