Bel: The Climbing Vine Border
The bel, a trailing vine of leaves and flowers, is one of the oldest borders in Indian textiles. Floral and vine borders were drawn in Mughal-era court workshops and are found across the subcontinent, in weaving, block printing and embroidery alike. In zardozi, a vine like this was stitched by hand in gold and silver wire so that it caught lamplight along the edge of a drape. Red is the colour of weddings and festivals across much of India. This saree is machine embroidered in gold thread and sequins, a modern version of that handwork.
