The design
Zardozi: Gold Sewn by Hand
Zardozi takes its name from the Persian zar, gold, and dozi, sewing. It flourished in the Mughal workshops, where craftsmen sewed gold and silver wire, seed pearls and stones onto silk and velvet stretched over a wooden frame, the adda. Lucknow, Agra and Bhopal still keep the craft, now mostly with gilded or synthetic thread. Red has long been the colour of the north Indian bride. Here a border of gold thread and beads, worked by hand in the same spirit, frames the neck and the deep back.
