Kairi: The Paisley Mango Motif
The paisley, called kairi or ambi in India, is a stylised mango. Its curved teardrop is often traced to the Persian boteh and became a signature of Kashmir's shawl weavers before spreading to Banarasi brocade, block printing and zardozi. The mango stood for abundance, which is why it turns up so often on wedding and festival cloth. On this blouse the paisley runs in scrolls of thread and sequins. It is machine embroidery, a modern version of hand-stitched zardozi.
