Abhla Bharat: Mirrors of Kutch
Abhla bharat, mirror work, comes from Kutch and Saurashtra in Gujarat and the desert villages of western Rajasthan. Rabari, Ahir and Jat women held small discs of glass, once mica, onto cloth with a ring of buttonhole stitch, then framed them with flowers in chain stitch. The mirrors were said to turn away the evil eye, and they flashed in lamplight at weddings and dances. Gota, the gold ribbon at this hem, is Rajasthan's festive trim. This koti carries the mirror-and-flower look in a modern, workshop-made form.
