Anarkali: The Mughal Peshwaz Revived
The anarkali takes its name from the pomegranate bud, anar kali, and from the legend of a dancer of that name at Akbar's court. Its shape is older than the story: the peshwaz, a robe fitted at the bodice and flared to the floor, worn by women of the Mughal courts and by the dancers who performed there. Hindi cinema revived it in the 1960s, and it has stayed festive wear since. Here the pleated flare ends in a deep border of silver thread and sequins.
