Sitara: The Embroiderer's Small Star

In Indian embroidery a sequin is a sitara, the Persian and Urdu word for star, or chamki, from the Hindi for shine. In the zardozi workshops that grew under Mughal patronage, sitaras were punched from flattened metal wire and stitched by hand among gold and silver thread, so a garment glittered by lamplight. The craft still lives in centres such as Lucknow, Agra and Bareilly. This saree is machine embroidered with light, iridescent sequins, a modern descendant of that hand-stitched sparkle.
