The design
Mirror Work: Kutch's Glass Embroidery
Mirror work, called abhla in Kutch and shisha in Hindi, stitches small pieces of mirror into cloth with bright thread. It is most associated with Kutch and with the pastoral communities of western Gujarat and Rajasthan, such as the Ahir, Rabari and Meghwal, who wore it on skirts, cholis and bags. The mirrors are said to ward off the evil eye, and the work is at its brightest at Navratri, when women dance garba in embroidered cholis. A bodice like this one carries that tradition into a flared lehenga for the festival.
