Sharara: The Flare of Awadh
The sharara grew up in Awadh, around Lucknow, where women of nawabi households wore wide, flared trousers under a short kurta and a long dupatta. Its cousin, the gharara, is fitted to the knee and then gathered into a flare; the sharara flares from the waist. Both became wedding wear across north India and Pakistan, often worked with zari and sitara, the small metal spangles that today's sequins replaced. Here the sequin vines climb the sharara from the hem.
