The design
Chintz: Painted Flowers from India's Coast
Chintz takes its name from the Hindi chhint, a painted or printed cotton. Artisans on India's Coromandel coast, around Masulipatnam and Pulicat, fixed colours with mordants and drew large flowers and vines on the cloth, by pen or block. From the seventeenth century traders carried these cottons to Southeast Asia, Persia and Europe, where the flowers shaped fashion and furnishing. This lehenga is a digital print of that tradition: the same bloom-and-vine idea, made by machine on sheer organza.
