The design
Jaal: The Net of Flowers
Jaal is the Hindi and Urdu word for net, and in Indian design it names an all-over pattern: flowers and leaves held together by a lattice of stems, with no single centre. Under the Mughals it spread across carpets, carved stone screens and woven and embroidered cloth, and karigars in Lucknow still lay out jaal by hand for chikankari. This kurta is machine embroidered, but its scattered flowers and trailing vines follow the same idea: a garden that covers the whole cloth.
