Butti: The Scattered Bud
Butti, from the Hindi booti for a small plant or sprig, is one small motif repeated across open ground. Under the Mughals, weavers and embroiderers scattered buttis over muslins and silks. The idea lives on in the butidar saris of Banaras, where each motif is woven into the cloth on the handloom, and in the bootis of Lucknow chikankari, stitched by hand. Here the buttis are machine embroidered in rani pink thread, scattered like buds across an anarkali, a name that itself means pomegranate bud.
