Buti: The Mughal Flowering Plant
Buti comes from buta, a flowering plant, and names the small sprays scattered across Indian cloth. The motif took its form in Mughal India. Jahangir prized flowers and had his painters record them from life, and under Shah Jahan the single flowering plant was carved in marble along the walls of the Taj Mahal, inlaid in stone and woven into carpets and silks. Here the sprays are worked in thread and sequins, scattered over the flare and rising from the border at the hem.
