Mirror Work: Kutch's Glass Embroidery
Mirror work, called abhla or shisha in Kutch, sets small pieces of glass into cloth with a ring of thread. It is tied most to the Kutch region of Gujarat and to parts of Rajasthan, where Rabari, Ahir and Mutwa women have long stitched it onto wedding and festive clothes. Each mirror was believed to ward off the evil eye. This piece has a machine-made mirror border on khadi cotton, not hand-stitched mirror work: the look and tradition are shared, the hand is not.
