Shisha Mirror Work: The Glass of Kutch
Mirror work, called shisha or abhla, is a thread craft of Kutch in Gujarat and the Thar desert of Rajasthan. Small pieces of silvered glass are held in a frame of buttonhole and chain stitches, worked by women in the pastoral and craft communities of the region. The mirror was believed to ward off the evil eye, and it caught lamplight at weddings and festivals. Machine and printed versions now copy the look. This set carries real mirror and moti work, and its border keeps that old tradition of glinting glass.
