The design
Bandhani & the Dancing Peacock
Bandhani comes from bandh, to tie. In Gujarat and Rajasthan, artisans pinch the cloth into tiny points and bind each one with thread before dyeing, so every dot marks a spot the dye could not reach. Pink and red bandhani has long been worn for weddings and auspicious days. The peacock, India's national bird, has been embroidered for centuries as a sign of beauty and the coming monsoon. Here the bandhani pattern rides on the dupatta, with peacocks dancing along the lehenga's hem.
