The design
Gamthi and Bandhani of Gujarat
Gamthi takes its name from gaam, the Gujarati word for village. It is the embroidery of rural Kutch and Saurashtra: dense chain and satin stitch in bright colours, with small mirrors called abhla held down by a ring of thread. Women stitched it for dowries and festival wear, and it became the look of garba nights. Bandhani, the region's tie-dye, is made by pinching and binding each dot by hand before dyeing. This choli carries gamthi-style mirror work; the skirt prints the bandhani dot rather than tying it.
