Gota Patti: Rajasthan's Ribbon of Light
Gota patti comes from Rajasthan, where artisans around Jaipur cut narrow ribbons woven with metal-wrapped thread, folded them into leaves, flowers and bands, and stitched them flat onto cloth. Because the ribbon carried real metal, gota-trimmed odhnis and lehengas were kept as heirlooms, worn for weddings and festivals and handed down. Today the ribbon is usually metallic polyester, light and untarnishing, but the effect is the same: thin lines of gold that catch the light. Here, rows of gota circle the hem of every panel.
