Cut Dana: Glass Grains of Zardozi
Dana means grain or seed in Hindi and Persian, and cut dana are short glass beads sliced so their faceted ends catch the light. They belong to the zardozi tradition that flourished at the Mughal courts, where embroiderers in Delhi, Agra and Lucknow set metal thread, seed pearls and beads onto silk and velvet with a needle or the hooked aari. Here the beads trace flowers and leaves across the kurta and the palazzo hem; the supplier does not say whether they are sewn by hand.
