Moti Work: From Pearls to Beads
Moti is the Hindi word for pearl, and it now names the glass and plastic beads that embroiderers sew in its place. Real seed pearls once trimmed garments at the Mughal and Deccan courts, and Hyderabad grew rich as a centre for drilling and trading them. In Saurashtra, women worked moti bharat, whole torans and wall hangings built from tiny glass beads. Here white beads are sewn as small leaf sprigs over a shimmering dusty pink ground; the supplier says the work is done by hand.
