The Bel: India's Flowering Vine Border
The bel, a trailing vine of leaves and flowers, is among the oldest border motifs in Indian textiles. It runs along the edges of Mughal-era embroidery and carved stone alike, and Lucknow's chikankari embroiderers still name it among their core patterns, worked by hand in white thread. A border that keeps growing was read as a wish for continuity and plenty. This saree's white-on-black vine border and scattered flower buttis are machine embroidered, drawing on that same vocabulary of the bel and the butti.
